WE'VE MOVED.

Hello All.

Well, we decided this week to change things up a bit with Classic Waxxx, and consolidate everything to a more convenient, mobile-friendly blog platform. In addition to the vintage vinyl reviews we've been covering over the last year (which we'll get back to momentarily), there is a swell visual survey kind of thing going on with vintage records from around the world on our Tumblr blog page, including audio tracks and other goodies you can enjoy daily. You can get your vintage vinyl fix more than just once a week, now.

So, thanks for following along with Classic Waxxx since its inception in September 2010. Hopefully, you readers will continue checking out Classic Waxxx HERE, and broadening your record collections in the process.

Rediscover your vinyl.

Willie Mitchell | "20-75" (US Single)

There are lots of great names to throw around when it comes to soul and funk music, such as  James Brown, Solomon Burke, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Al Green and Otis Redding. But, there is one often over-looked name that really deserves and commands the attention of all, and that man's name in Willie Mitchell.

Mitchell, in the early years of his career as a musician, performer and band leader, started out as a classically trained trumpet player, but was lured in by the sounds of soul and rhythm and blues music by the mid-1950s. By 1963, Mitchell was signed to the fledgling Hi Records label, a predominantly R&B instrumental label, writing and recording a string of modest hits until his "20-75" single hit the Southern airwaves in 1964, producing Mitchell's first big regional hit record.

Classic Waxxx Records?

I think it has a nice ring to it. Perhaps our very own brand of vinyl may be hitting your turntable in the not-so-distant future...

New and Improved 'Classic Waxxx' Coming Soon...

As a music-obsessed fan that immensely enjoys collecting, playing and searching high and low for vintage and obscure vinyl records, it's been a real pleasure sharing my vinyl finds to the masses on Classic Waxxx.

When I started the Classic Waxxx blog at the end of September 2010, the goal was to expose new and casual music and vinyl fans to some of the great things that were out there, to share over-looked and possibly long-forgotten records that may or may not exist in digital format, and to get people excited about the great music treasures that lay hidden in their parent's or grand parent's record collections, or even the numerous used record shops that are tucked away in your local communities.

Jimmy Reed | At Soul City

With the start of a new year at Classic Waxxx HQ there are large stacks of incredible vinyl to sort through that was obtained over the holidays. Rock n' Roll, Jazz, Country, Bluegrass and the like all wait to be played and shared. It's such a treat to discover new music by groups loved and practically unknown, and with another year come and gone it means there is just more music out there that needs some attention.

It was a difficult decision to pick the new year's first record review, but Jimmy Reed's "At Soul City" LP snuck in from left field for several reasons. First of all, I love blues records. Maybe more than most other records in the CW collection. I also love live recordings, and especially live blues records. But, I do have a little bone to pick with Vee-Jay Records for their release of "At Soul City."

Loretta Lynn | Country Christmas

Christmas is definitely one of my favorite times of the year, despite the crazy holiday shoppers, insane schedules to keep and the stress of travel the season brings with it. However, the thought of Loretta Lynn's "Country Christmas" seems to make all those anxieties disappear.

I've always thought of Loretta Lynn as an awesomely warm and caring aunt, much like Rosalind Russell in the film "Auntie Mame." She's been there and done that, has all the great stories to tell from her experiences, and is definitely a hip lady you want to listen to.

The Ventures | The Ventures' Christmas Album

It's hard to believe that another year is just about over, and the spirit of Christmas is already swirling in the air. All the department stores and specialty shops will no doubt be playing a bevy of Christmas music over the speaker system, but I can almost guarantee you they won't be playing anything as cool as "The Ventures' Christmas Album."

The surf guitar quartet that made the original 'Hawaii Five-O' theme song popular ("Walk, Don't Run") trades in the beach and sand in favor of snow and mistletoe with their ever-awesome renditions of holiday classics.
